Spiral Breakdown Proper Drive · Cary Kolat
What it is
Kolat teaches the hip angle and driving direction for the spiral breakdown that actually turns opponents.
Why it's great
Most spiral breakdown teaching shows the arm position but skips why athletes get stalled out on their belly. Kolat isolates the drive vector — hips low, driving across the body line rather than straight down. It's the missing detail that separates a stalemate from back points.
How to use it in practice
Use this as a 10-minute correction segment when your kids are getting the spiral grip but not finishing. Drill from referee's position: lock the spiral, freeze, check hip height and drive angle, then complete the turn. Partner gives resistance only after position is set. Fixes the most common breakdown mistake in one practice.
